You can forget half of what you studied last night and still remember the exact lyrics to a song you haven't heard in ten years.
Sometimes you don't even like the song.
Yet somehow your brain has decided that one completely useless line from it deserves permanent storage.
That can feel ridiculous when you're trying to remember something that actually matters. You read the same page three times, close the book, and suddenly you can't remember what you just read. Then a song comes on and your brain supplies every word without being asked.
Your memory isn't necessarily bad.
Your brain simply doesn't store everything you experience in the same way.
Your brain doesn't record everything you see
It would be easy to imagine memory as a giant hard drive. Everything that happens gets recorded, and when you need something, you simply open the right file.
That's not what happens.
Your brain is constantly deciding what deserves attention and what can be ignored. Attention is one of the first gates information has to pass through before it can become a lasting memory.
That's why you can read a paragraph while thinking about something completely different and reach the end without being able to explain a single sentence.
Your eyes saw the words.
That doesn't mean your brain properly encoded them.
Encoding is the process of turning an experience into information that can later be remembered. If you weren't paying much attention in the first place, there may not be much useful information stored for you to retrieve later.
This is one reason simply reading something over and over isn't always enough.
You can look at the same sentence ten times without creating a strong memory of it.
So why do songs stick?
Songs have several things working in their favor.
For starters, music is highly structured. A melody gives the brain a pattern. Lyrics have rhythm, repetition, rhyme, and predictable sequences. Once you've learned enough of a song, one part can help you retrieve the next.
You don't normally memorize a song by sitting down and consciously studying every line.
You hear it repeatedly.
You sing along.
You hear the chorus coming.
You notice the rhythm.
Sometimes you remember the words even though you weren't trying to learn them at all.
That repeated exposure gives your brain multiple opportunities to strengthen the memory.
There's also a difference between passively seeing information once and repeatedly retrieving it.
If you hear the same chorus twenty times, you're not just hearing it. Your brain is repeatedly reconstructing the sequence. After enough exposure, the next word becomes easier to predict and produce.
That's very different from reading a page once and expecting to remember it tomorrow.
Repetition helps, but repetition alone isn't magic
This is where studying gets interesting.
Repeating information can strengthen memory, but the way you repeat it matters.
Reading the same notes again and again can create a feeling of familiarity. The page looks familiar, so you start to feel like you know the material.
Then the notes disappear.
Suddenly you're staring at a blank page trying to remember what was on it.
One of the more useful ways to strengthen memory is retrieval practice. Instead of repeatedly looking at the answer, you try to produce the answer yourself.
Read a concept.
Close the book.
Explain it from memory.
Then check what you missed.
That little struggle is useful because you're actually practicing the thing you'll eventually need to do: retrieve the information.
It's similar to why you can remember a song by singing it without the lyrics in front of you. You're not simply recognizing the words. You're pulling them out of memory.
Emotion can make memories stick
Now consider the songs you remember from particular periods of your life.
Maybe there's a song you associate with school. Another reminds you of a particular person. One takes you straight back to a holiday, a breakup, a party, a difficult year, or some completely ordinary afternoon you haven't thought about in ages.
The song itself may be only part of the memory.
Emotion and context can make an experience more memorable because they influence how the brain processes and stores information.
That's one reason emotionally significant events can remain vivid for years while ordinary details disappear quickly.
You probably don't remember what you ate on a random Tuesday three years ago.
But if something unusual happened that day, there's a much better chance you'll remember it.
The brain isn't trying to preserve an accurate diary of every moment.
It's constantly prioritizing.
This also explains the smell that suddenly brings back a memory
A familiar smell can sometimes transport you back to a particular time almost instantly.
You smell a certain perfume and suddenly remember a person.
You catch the smell of food and remember your childhood kitchen.
You walk past a place and recognize a scent you haven't encountered in years.
This isn't because the smell contains the memory.
It's because sensory information becomes associated with experiences, and those associations can later help trigger retrieval.
The brain doesn't store memories as isolated little files. Memories are connected to other pieces of information, including places, sounds, smells, emotions, and other sensory details.
That's why a small cue can sometimes unlock something you haven't consciously thought about for years.
And then there's sleep
You can study for hours and still struggle to remember everything the next morning.
That doesn't mean nothing happened in your brain after you closed the book.
Sleep plays a major role in memory consolidation, the process through which newly learned information becomes more stable over time.
Your brain continues processing information after you've stopped studying. Different stages of sleep appear to support different aspects of memory, including the strengthening and organization of newly learned information.
This is one reason an all-night study session isn't necessarily the smartest way to prepare for something.
You might squeeze more hours of studying into the night, but cutting sleep can interfere with the processes that help those memories stick.
Sometimes going to sleep is part of studying.
Why do you sometimes remember something later?
This is another strange part of memory.
You can spend several minutes trying to remember someone's name, give up, and then suddenly remember it twenty minutes later while you're doing something completely unrelated.
The information wasn't necessarily erased.
You were having trouble retrieving it.
Memory has at least two different problems to contend with: getting information stored in the first place and getting it back out when you need it.
Those aren't the same thing.
You might have learned something properly but struggle to retrieve it because the right cues aren't available at that moment.
Then another thought, place, word, or association provides the missing cue and suddenly the memory appears.
It can feel as though your brain found the information out of nowhere.
It didn't.
You just finally found a path back to it.
So why can you remember a useless lyric but forget something you studied?
Because the song probably had a much better memory setup.
It may have been repeated dozens of times. It had rhythm and melody. You actively sang or heard the words. Different parts of the song became connected to one another. Perhaps you associated it with a particular period, person, place, or emotion.
The information you studied might have had none of that.
You may have read it once while tired, distracted, or worried about something else.
Then you expected your brain to reproduce it the next day.
That's a pretty weak memory signal.
The difference isn't necessarily that your brain decided the song was important and your textbook wasn't.
It's that the song gave your brain more opportunities to encode, connect, repeat, and retrieve the information.
You can use the same trick when studying
You don't need to turn your revision notes into pop songs.
Although, if that works for you, I won't judge.
A better approach is to make the information easier for your brain to retrieve.
- After learning something, close the notes and try to explain it without looking.
- Come back to it later instead of doing all your studying in one sitting.
- Connect new ideas to things you already understand.
- Use examples.
- Test yourself.
- And get enough sleep for your brain to process what you've learned.
The goal isn't to force your brain to remember everything.
That's not how memory works.
The useful trick is to give important information enough attention, meaning, repetition, and retrieval opportunities that your brain has a good reason to keep it around.
Which makes that annoying song lyric a little less mysterious.
Your brain didn't necessarily decide the lyrics were more important than your exam.
The song just happened to be very good at getting remembered.
