Walk into someone else's house and you may notice the smell almost immediately.

It might be cooking, laundry detergent, perfume, pets, wood furniture, air freshener, or just a faint smell you can't quite identify. You probably wouldn't call it good or bad. It's simply the smell of that particular home.

Then you walk back into your own house and notice almost nothing.

Your house hasn't suddenly become odorless. The same smells are still in the air. You're just no longer paying much attention to them.

This happens because your sense of smell adapts to odors that are around you repeatedly. The effect is sometimes called olfactory adaptation or olfactory habituation. Instead of continuing to treat a familiar, unchanging smell as important information, your nervous system gradually reduces your response to it.

That's why your own house can have a recognizable smell to everyone else while seeming almost completely neutral to you.

Your nose doesn't measure smells like a thermometer measures temperature

It would be easy to imagine that smelling works like taking a measurement.

If an odor is present, your nose detects it. If it gets stronger, you smell more of it. If it disappears, you stop smelling it.

Real smell perception is more complicated.

Odor molecules enter your nose when you breathe. Some of them interact with receptors in the olfactory epithelium, the specialized tissue high inside the nasal cavity. Those receptors send information into the olfactory system, including the olfactory bulb and areas of the brain involved in identifying and interpreting smells.

But your brain isn't interested in reporting every molecule that enters your nose.

It has far too much information to deal with already.

If you had to consciously notice the smell of your furniture, carpet, clothes, soap, cooking, cleaning products and everything else in your home every second of the day, ordinary life would become surprisingly distracting.

So the olfactory system becomes less responsive to smells that remain around you.

Researchers describe this reduction in perceived odor intensity as adaptation or habituation. It can happen relatively quickly, and higher parts of the brain's olfactory system can adapt particularly strongly to a continuing odor.

Your house hasn't stopped smelling.

Your perception of its background smell has changed.

Why can you smell someone else's house?

Because their house has a different chemical background from the one you're used to.

Imagine spending several hours at home. Your brain is continually receiving information from the odors around you, but those odors are familiar and relatively stable.

Then you leave.

You spend some time outside. You get into your car. You visit a shop. You go somewhere else entirely.

During that time, the mixture of smells surrounding you changes.

When you eventually open your front door and walk inside, the familiar collection of odors is suddenly different from the background you've been experiencing.

That change makes it easier to notice.

It's similar to what happens when you spray perfume.

At first, the smell can seem strong. After wearing it for a while, you may barely notice it.

Someone standing next to you, however, may still notice the perfume immediately.

The perfume didn't necessarily disappear. Your perception of it changed.

The same basic principle applies to your home.

Your brain is especially good at filtering familiar smells

This isn't simply a case of your nose becoming useless.

Different parts of the olfactory system contribute to adaptation, and research suggests that the brain can become particularly adapted to familiar odors. One reason this matters is that the olfactory system needs to distinguish a new smell from the enormous mixture of smells that already form the background.

That distinction is useful.

Suppose you're sitting in your living room. The room has its normal background smell.

Then something starts burning in the kitchen.

You don't want your brain to treat the entire room as one unchanging smell. You need to notice the new signal.

The olfactory system has mechanisms that help separate changing or relevant odors from the background.

In other words, adapting to your house isn't a design flaw.

It's part of how your sense of smell helps you notice changes.

This is why coming home after a trip can be different

One of the easiest ways to notice your own home's smell is to leave for a while.

You might return from a vacation or even spend a substantial part of the day somewhere else. When you open the door, you may suddenly notice a smell that wasn't obvious before.

People sometimes describe this as their house suddenly smelling musty, dusty, clean, warm, smoky or simply like "home."

The house didn't necessarily develop that smell while you were gone.

You were simply no longer continuously exposed to the same background.

The Washington Post has described this familiar combination of odors as a home's "signature scent," which can come from many sources throughout the house rather than from one particular smell.

Once you're back inside for long enough, that smell can fade from conscious awareness again.

Why can visitors notice something you can't?

Because the visitor doesn't have the same history with your home's smell.

Someone walking through your front door has just come from a different odor environment.

Their olfactory system hasn't spent the previous several hours being exposed to the exact mixture of smells in your house.

So the background is new.

That doesn't mean visitors have some special ability to detect smells that you can't. They may simply be starting from a different sensory baseline.

This also explains why two people can disagree about whether a room smells.

One person may notice an odor immediately while another barely detects it.

Smell perception isn't determined only by what molecules are present. Exposure, familiarity, attention and individual differences can all affect what a person consciously notices.

Your house actually has a mixture of smells

There usually isn't one single thing responsible for "the smell of your house."

It's a combination.

Furniture, carpets, curtains, clothing, cooking, cleaning products, personal-care products, pets, food, dust, building materials and ventilation can all contribute to the air and surfaces around a home.

Some odors come directly from substances releasing volatile compounds into the air. Others are carried in on clothing or generated by everyday activities.

The result is a constantly changing mixture.

You don't consciously identify every component.

Instead, after repeated exposure, the overall background becomes familiar.

That's one reason you may struggle to describe your own home's smell even if someone else can notice that it has one.

Is your nose becoming less sensitive?

Partly, but that isn't the whole story.

Olfactory adaptation can involve changes at several stages of the smell-processing system.

Studies of human olfaction have found evidence for adaptation at the level of the olfactory epithelium, while other research points to strong adaptation within the brain's olfactory pathways. The relative contribution depends on the odor and the conditions of exposure.

So saying "your brain ignores it" is a useful shorthand, but it's not literally the entire mechanism.

Your nose and brain are both involved.

The important part is that repeated exposure reduces the perceived intensity of an odor.

Why does opening a window sometimes make smells noticeable again?

Changing the air changes the odor environment.

Fresh outdoor air can dilute some indoor odors, while ventilation can also remove or redistribute volatile compounds that have accumulated indoors.

Afterward, when you return to the room, the balance of odors may be different.

That can make certain smells stand out again.

There is another effect too. A changing environment gives your olfactory system new information to process. Sensory systems are generally better at detecting changes than continuously reporting an unchanging background.

This is one reason a smell that seemed to disappear can suddenly become noticeable again.

The same thing can happen with your perfume

Your own perfume is another good example.

You spray it in the morning and immediately notice it.

An hour later, you may think the fragrance has completely disappeared.

Then someone else tells you they can smell it.

That's not necessarily because they're imagining it, and it doesn't necessarily mean the perfume suddenly became stronger around them.

You have been exposed to the same odor continuously.

They haven't.

Your sensory system has had time to adapt to it.

This is also why repeatedly spraying perfume because you think you've "lost the smell" can sometimes result in much more fragrance than you intended.

Your nose may simply have stopped giving you the same strong signal.

What about your own body odor?

The same general principle can apply to familiar personal smells.

People are exposed to their own skin, hair, clothing, bedding and personal-care products every day. Familiar odors can therefore become less noticeable over time.

That doesn't mean a person is completely incapable of detecting their own body odor.

It means their perception may not be a reliable way to judge how noticeable a familiar odor is to someone who isn't accustomed to it.

This is one reason an unfamiliar person may notice a smell that you don't.

Does everyone experience this in exactly the same way?

No.

People differ in their ability to detect and identify odors.

Genetics, age, health, medications, nasal conditions, previous exposure and individual differences in smell perception can all affect what someone notices.

Even the same person may perceive an odor differently depending on concentration, duration of exposure, attention and the surrounding smells.

Adaptation also isn't an on-off switch.

You don't necessarily go from "I can smell this" to "I absolutely cannot smell this."

Perceived intensity can gradually decrease.

And if the odor changes or something new appears, your attention can return to the smell.

Why do some smells refuse to disappear?

Not every odor fades from awareness in the same way.

Some smells remain noticeable because they are strong, irritating, unpleasant, or continually changing.

A sudden smell of smoke, for example, can grab your attention even when you're surrounded by other familiar odors.

The olfactory system isn't simply trying to make every smell disappear. It's trying to manage a huge amount of sensory information and respond appropriately to changes.

That distinction matters.

If your kitchen normally smells faintly of cooking, you may barely notice it.

If something starts burning, the new and potentially significant odor is much harder to ignore.

Can you become permanently unable to smell your house?

Ordinary olfactory adaptation isn't the same thing as permanently losing your sense of smell.

If you leave your home and return later, you may notice its smell again because you've had a break from the odor environment.

A genuine loss or major change in the ability to smell is different.

Conditions such as nasal problems, infections, head injuries, certain medications and neurological disorders can affect smell. A persistent or unexplained change in your sense of smell is therefore not something that should automatically be blamed on "nose blindness."

The everyday experience of not noticing your home's smell, by itself, is generally a normal example of sensory adaptation.

So why can't you smell your own house?

Because you're inside its smell all the time.

Your home has a background mixture of odors, and your olfactory system is continually exposed to them. With repeated exposure, the perceived intensity of familiar smells decreases. The effect involves both the sensory side of smell and processing farther along in the brain.

When you walk into someone else's house, you're encountering a different odor environment.

When you leave your own home and come back later, your sensory baseline has changed.

For a moment, the smell of your own house becomes new again.

Then, as usual, your brain starts treating it as background.

Your house didn't stop smelling.

You just stopped noticing.
