There's a strange moment that happens to almost everyone.

You look in the mirror and think you look perfectly normal. Then someone takes a photo of you, you see it on the screen, and suddenly your face looks... different.

Not necessarily worse. Just unfamiliar.

Your nose seems slightly different. One eye looks higher. Your face looks wider or narrower. Sometimes flipping the photo makes it look even stranger.

So which version is actually you?

The mirror? The selfie? The photo taken by someone else?

The annoying answer is that none of them is a perfect representation of how you look to another person. Each one changes what you see in a different way.

And the biggest difference isn't usually that cameras are "lying."

It's geometry.

Your mirror isn't showing your face the way other people see it

Stand in front of a mirror and look at yourself.

What you're seeing is a reflection of the light coming from your face. The mirror doesn't physically rearrange your features, but it does reverse the image from left to right.

Your left side appears on the right side of the reflection, and your right side appears on the left.

That sounds like a tiny detail. It isn't.

Faces aren't perfectly symmetrical.

One eyebrow might sit slightly higher. One cheek might be a little fuller. Your nose may lean subtly to one side. Even small differences can become noticeable when you see the same face reversed.

You've also spent years looking at your reflection.

That's the version of your face your brain knows best.

So when you see a photograph that isn't reversed in the same way, your brain can register it as unfamiliar even when nothing about your actual face has suddenly changed.

This is one reason a photo can look "wrong" simply because it isn't the orientation you're used to seeing.

But that doesn't mean the mirror is more accurate

It's tempting to say, "The mirror is the real me because that's what I look like every morning."

Not quite.

A mirror gives you a very useful view of yourself, but it's still a particular viewing setup.

You're usually standing at a certain distance from a large, flat surface. The reflection preserves the proportions of your face reasonably well because you're not using a camera lens to squeeze the three dimensional scene into a photograph.

But other people aren't looking at a reflection.

They're seeing your face directly.

And that changes the situation.

Your face is three dimensional. Your nose sits closer to the observer than your ears do. Your cheeks sit somewhere between them. Your forehead, eyes, mouth and chin are all at slightly different distances.

The way those features appear depends partly on how far away the observer is.

That's where cameras can get weird.

The biggest selfie problem is usually distance

Take your phone and hold it very close to your face.

Now look at what happens when you move it farther away.

Your face doesn't physically change, obviously. But its proportions in the photograph can change noticeably.

That's because of perspective.

When a camera is close to your face, features that are closer to the lens occupy a larger angle of view than features farther away.

Your nose is closer to the camera than your ears are, for example. From a very short distance, that difference matters more.

The result can make the center of your face appear more prominent while the sides of your face appear farther away.

This is why close selfies can make facial features look different from how they appear when someone views you from a normal conversational distance.

The lens matters too, but people often blame the lens for something that's really being caused by camera distance and perspective.

Move the camera farther away and use a longer focal length to fill the frame, and the proportions generally look more like what you'd see from farther away.

That's why a portrait taken from several feet away can look surprisingly different from a selfie taken at arm's length.

Same face.

Different geometry.

Why does the front camera sometimes make your nose look huge?

Your nose isn't suddenly bigger because you opened the camera app.

It's sitting closer to the camera than the rest of your face.

When the phone is close, that difference in distance becomes more significant.

Imagine photographing a person while standing extremely close to them. The nearest parts of their face occupy much more of the image than they would if you stepped back.

That's perspective distortion.

The effect isn't limited to noses. It can affect the apparent size and spacing of different facial features, particularly when you're using a camera from a very short distance.

Wide angle lenses can make the effect more noticeable when you're close to the subject, but simply saying "wide angle lenses distort your face" misses part of the story.

Distance is doing a lot of the work.

Step back and the face changes again

Here's a simple way to see this without needing fancy equipment.

Take several photos of the same person while keeping the person's head in roughly the same position in the frame.

Take one from very close.

Then step back.

Step back again.

If your camera allows it, use a longer focal length for the farther shots and adjust your position so the face occupies a similar amount of the frame.

The person's face hasn't changed.

But the photographs can look surprisingly different.

At closer distances, the difference between the distance to the nose and the distance to the ears is relatively large.

At greater distances, that difference becomes much smaller compared with the total camera-to-face distance.

The features therefore appear more similar in relative size.

This is why professional portrait photographers don't usually shove a phone a few inches from someone's face and call it a day.

Then there's the photo processing

Modern phones don't simply capture a raw picture and display it untouched.

The camera system processes the image.

Depending on the phone and camera mode, software can adjust things such as exposure, color, sharpness, noise reduction, HDR and other aspects of the image.

Some phones also apply specific processing to faces or selfies.

That means two phones can photograph the same person under the same general conditions and produce noticeably different images.

And lighting can change your appearance even more dramatically.

Put a light above your head and shadows appear under your eyes and nose.

Move the light in front of you and those shadows change.

Put the light to one side and one half of your face becomes more prominent.

Your face hasn't changed.

The light has changed what parts of it are emphasized.

Why does flipping a photo make you look so strange?

This one can feel particularly bizarre.

You take a photo.

It looks okay.

Then you flip it horizontally and suddenly you notice things you never saw before.

Your brain hasn't discovered a new face.

It's seeing the same face in the opposite orientation.

Because you're accustomed to seeing your reflection, the flipped and unflipped versions can feel surprisingly different. And because human faces aren't perfectly symmetrical, reversing the image changes the arrangement of those small differences.

The effect can be stronger when you stare at your own face than when you look at somebody else's.

You know your own face extremely well, but you're most familiar with one particular orientation of it.

Your brain has had years of practice recognizing that version.

Change the arrangement and it can feel subtly wrong.

So which one shows what you actually look like?

If by "actually" you mean what another person sees when they're standing in front of you, a normal photograph taken from a sensible distance is generally a better approximation than a close selfie or your mirror reflection.

But even that isn't exactly what another person experiences.

People don't see you as a flat photograph.

They see you in three dimensions.

They see you moving.

They see your expressions changing.

They see your face from slightly different angles as they move around you. They also see you under changing lighting conditions, and their brains are constantly processing all of that information.

A single photograph freezes one tiny viewpoint.

That's why getting one bad photo doesn't mean the camera has exposed some hidden version of your face.

It may simply be an unflattering combination of distance, lens, lighting, expression and timing.

Why do you usually like your reflection more?

Familiarity is a big part of it.

You see your reflection constantly. It's probably the version of your face you've spent the most time looking at.

Photos also tend to catch your face in ways you don't normally experience.

You might be halfway through a blink.

Your mouth might be between expressions.

Your head might be tilted slightly.

The lighting might be harsh.

And you're suddenly looking at a frozen image rather than the moving face you normally see in a mirror or in another person.

There's another small psychological difference too.

When you're looking in a mirror, you're usually controlling the experience. You choose the angle. You adjust your hair. You change your expression.

A random photograph doesn't give you that luxury.

It just catches whatever happened at that particular fraction of a second.

The camera isn't showing a fake version of you

This is probably the most useful way to think about the whole thing.

A mirror, a selfie and a photograph aren't three competing versions of your "real" face.

They're three different ways of observing the same three dimensional object.

The mirror changes the orientation.

The camera changes the perspective.

The distance changes how large nearby features appear relative to features farther away.

The lens affects the field of view and how the scene is projected.

Lighting changes the shadows and highlights.

Image processing changes what the final picture looks like.

And your own familiarity changes how strange or normal the result feels.

Put all of those together and it's perfectly possible to look at yourself in a mirror, take a selfie, have a friend photograph you from across the room, and feel like you're looking at three slightly different people.

You're not.

It's the same face being seen through different setups.

So if you ever look at a photo and think, "Why does my face look nothing like that in the mirror?", don't immediately blame your face.

Move the camera farther away. Change the lighting. Try another focal length. Flip the image and compare it with the version you're used to seeing.

You may find that the mystery isn't your face at all.

It's the camera.
